Tape CorrectionTheory & Practice in Surveying

Tape Correction

Temperature Correction

To be added or subracted
\[ c_t = C (T_o – T_s) L \] Where:
$c_t$ = temperature correction
$C$ = Coefficient of thermal expansion
$T_o$ = observed temperature
$T_s$ = standard temperature
$L$ = nominal length

Tension/Pull Correction

To be added or subracted
\[ c_p = \frac{(P_o – P_s)L}{AE} \] Where:
$c_p$ = tension/pull correction
$P_o$ = observed tension/pull
$P_s$ = standard tension/pull
$L$ = nominal length
$A$ = cross-sectional area of tape
$E$ = modulus of elasticity of tape

Sag Correction

To be subracted
\[ c_s = \frac{w^2L^3}{24P^2} \] Where:
$c_s$ = sag correction
$w$ = weight of tape in plf. or kg.m.
$L$ = unsupported length of tape
$P$ = actual pull/tension applied

Slope Correction

To be subracted
\[ c_{slope} = \frac{h^2}{2S} \] \[ H = S – c_{slope} \] Where:
$c_{slope}$ = slope correction
$h$ = difference in elevation at the end of the tape
$S$ = inclined distance
$H$ = corrected distance
